My thoughts on the Bioshock: Infinite trailer…

My thoughts on the Bioshock: Infinite trailer…

When I speak on the matter of Bioshock, know that I am speaking from the heart for a franchise that matters more to me than any other video game series. In fact my passion for the game dwarfs my interests in most things movies, music & sport. The City of Rapture is one of the most unique and tremendous environments ever created for entertainment purposes & I will never believe that the games have gotten their due credit. I tell you this because I want you to know where I am coming from and how big a deal the surprise announcement of a third Bioshock installment was.

I’m sure if you cared enough to read this far into the post that you are aware of Bioshock and aware that a new trailer is out for “Bioshock: Infinite.” This will be the first in the series that does not take place in the underwater city known as Rapture. In the interests of full disclosure, I am aware that the concept of Rapture seems to have drawn heavily on ‘Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. Anyone that has played the series knows that the environment was a HUGE part of what made the game so appealing. The music, look & feel of the game was just as important as the gameplay. If not more so. That is why I am very nervous about taking Bioshock out of Rapture. I am worried about taking the darkness out of what is a very dark franchise. “Bioshock: Infinite” will take place in the flying city of Columbia. From what we’ve seen thus far, the visuals are very bright and stunning. Another huge difference is that the dystopian city of Rapture was built by Andrew Ryan to escape the nationalism and politics of the world’s super powers while Columbia seems to be built BY those very things.

What is even MORE concerning for this patriot is that it looks like you are fighting an enemy that is flying the American flag. I’m sure the antagonist will prove to me some sort of zealot that is corrupting the ideals of our great country, but I still don’t like it. I don’t kill Marines in Call of Duty, I do not relish the idea of fighting Americans. Have we become so overly politically correct that the only nation we feel comfortable making a villain in a video game is our own? I can look past all of the gripes I have laid out here. If Ken Levine & Irrational Games are making this thing and the mechanics are similar to the first Bioshock, they already have my 60 bucks. What I am discussing here is legacy. The most important aspect of the first 2 games, the one thing that HAS to remain in this third installment no matter WHERE it takes place is the moral question. To rescue or harvest. The moral dilemma in harvesting the Little Sisters. To slaughter a child to further your own cause. Nothing like that had really been attempted in gaming before. There are multiple references to children in the trailer for “Infinite.” There is even THIS propaganda poster that features a mother CHOOSING between one child & another. This aspect of the game is essential and I’m confident it’s developers are cognizant of that fact.

That leaves the Big Daddies. The most important characters from the series. The minibosses that were not evil, but had to be dispatched during the game. They were enigmatic monsters that were discovered to be quite tragic figures. IGN did a nice little breakdown of the “Infinite” trailer. During the video, you see multiple images of tiny Big Daddy model. This is strange because the events of this game are set decades before the events of the first two Bioshock games. There is some sort of robotic monster featured in the trailer that pitches the protagonist out of a window. The guys from IGN that are breaking down the trailer hypothesize that these could just be lumbering sentinels inside the city. That will not suffice. Whatever these things are, they are very important to the success of this game. The Big Daddies had human beings trapped inside of them. Will a robot with merely a human heart suffice? I’m not sure.

The good thing about this whole thing is that we don’t know shit. We know dick now, but we still don’t know shit. There is enough here to spawn debate and conjecture for months amongst fanboys like me. I am of the mind that Rapture was the perfect setting for multiple video games that could last us for years & years. I have confidence in Levine and his mob, but I loved Bioshock 2 also. I am looking forward to the upcoming downloadable content for BS2 that continues the storyline established in that game. If there could be some sort of trade off, a la Call of Duty between developers, I’m all for that. One game in Columbia in 2012, one in Rapture in 2013? Done & Done. The point in all this is: if you are going to change something that is really, really good, please don’t fuck it up. Check out the official site HERE.

*UPDATE* The very detail oriented Bioshock Wiki has a great description of how the city of Columbia came to be. Not sure how much of this was included in any of the previous articles, but the city definitely seems to have a lot of mystery surrounding it.  Sounds more  like it’s sister metropolis  of Rapture:

Constructed by the American government as “Project Icarus” and originally conceived as a floating symbol of American ideals at a time when the United States was emerging as a world power, Columbia is dispatched to distant shores with great fanfare by a captivated public. The buildings were constructed on giant reactors and self-sustaining balloons to make the city literally fly over the clouds. But what begins as a brand new endeavor of hope turns drastically wrong as the city after a strange incident loses all controls and soon disappears for a decade into the clouds to whereabouts unknown.

However in 1912, former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to find it and to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood for 15 years.

Click HERE to see for yourself and spend some time on the Bioshock 2 viral information if you want to be drawn into the lore further.

Bioshock 2 Frenzy!!

Bioshock 2 Frenzy!!

My favorite game of all time is Bioshock.  It isn’t even close. No disrespect to Goldeneye, Star Craft, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2, NHLPA Hockey, NFL Blitz, Borderlands, Call of Duty, 10 Yard Fight or any of the other games that have impacted my life.  Bioshock is a work of art.   It transcends gaming, movies and even entertainment itself. It is perfect. The music, the canon, the characters, the voice acting, the plot twists, there is nothing I didn’t love.   Which is exactly the reason why I was very concerned and aroused, simultaneously. The prospect of more time in Rapture with the creaking tunnels, hissing splicers and rumbling Big Daddies was intoxicating.  But does one dare tinker with perfection? Is there something to be said for “going out on a high note” like one George Costanza taught us many years ago?

I have always thought that was a bullshit, loser way of thinking.  People that say there should not be a follow up to the Dark Knight for instance.   They are fucking retarded.   Use a sports analogy. The New Orleans Saints just had a miraculous season. It was comprised of the stuff written in story books. Does anyone think the Saints should shut down the franchise now? Will they ruin this championship if they lose the NFC title game next year? Of course not. If Francis Ford Coppola stopped when he achieved perfect, we would not have had the pleasure of watching The Godfather 2. It’s ludicrous to stop working just because you’ve done something well.

That’s why I wasn’t one of the vocal throngs of nerds condemning a sequel to the game of the year from the get go. I was trepidatious because of the changes that I had read about. The change in protagonist. The change in the villain. The addition of multiplayer.  All of my trepidation was put to rest about an hour in the game. Keep in mind I have only logged about five hours of playing time thus far and I wouldn’t spoil it for you if I had played more. What I have witnessed thus far has put to rest any worries I had ever held.

To start, it was so amazing to step foot in Rapture. The sounds, the music, the gloom in the fallen city was all still there. That being said, it was very different. Things had defiantly changed in the underwater city and the change was in the perfect proportion. You could really tell you were in a different part of the city, but it wasn’t so new as to lose the amazing atmosphere offered in the first Bioshock. I don’t want to give too many details but I will say there are enough nods to events that took place in the previous installment to really get you inner nerd going.

I snapped a couple of screenshots to give an example of what I am saying.  If the images above are unfamiliar, than I doubt you would be reading this post at this juncture.  2K did an incredible job of keeping the game both different and familiar enough to walk the line of potentially the perfect sequel.  I haven’t touch the multiplayer and I don’t know how they can match “Would you kindly?”  Regardless, the wait was well worth to the sequel of the best video game of all time.  Rise Rapture, Rise.

Want to see 100 dollars in action figures?

Want to see 100 dollars in action figures?

When I was a kid, 100 dollars would have bought about 25 GI Joes.  It would have bought all four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Turtle Van for them to cruise around with. Little did I know that 20 years later, it would buy me 4 action figures.  Of course in the late 80’s, I didn’t think by the time I was 31 that I would have practically the same interests as I did when I was 10.  But low and behold it’s 2010 and I stink.

On the shopping list was Dante and Rios from Army of Two: The 40th Day.  I plan on having them fist bump the moment they reach the Chad Pad.  I already had the Big Daddy figure so the next logical step was to pick up the Big Sister and Subject Delta Big Daddy from the Bioshock 2 series.  It’s gonna piss my girlfriend off when I drag a hose up the stairs and fill my apartment with water to recreate Rapture.  But I mean, what the hell else am I gonna do?

If you have any other suggestions, feel free to post them below.

On the shopping list was

Watch UFC 108 with Swinging Dicks…

Watch UFC 108 with Swinging Dicks…

Gotta give an extra plug to the bar that stepped up to the plate.  January 2nd, 2010.  The first appearance of the new decade.  Join Ol’ Thad out at Grevey’s in Falls Church Virginia for UFC 108: Evans vs Silva. This joint is perfect for our needs. They have good food, no cover and reasonably priced drinks. It’s the perfect place for us to watch the fights.

I’m gonna be very honest though. We have to make it worth their while to have us back. Come out and watch the fights for free and show Grevey’s that Ol’ Thad and his friendos come out to watch the UFC.  We all know what we have been through trying to find a place to watch these fights together.  This is a GREAT opportunity to find a home base to watch the UFC.

We will have tickets to give away to the UFC Fight Night in Fairfax that is taking place January 11th at the Patriot Center. Just another reason for you to saunter your silly ass down to Grevey’s.

Big night for the UFC…and not how you think.

Big night for the UFC…and not how you think.

Sure, BJ Penn was dismantling Diego Sanchez. Sure, Frank Mir was making Cheick Kongo black out quicker than local coverage of a Jacksonville Jaguars game. Sure, Kenny Florian was choking out Clay Guida. Those were all great things for the UFC. But they weren’t the only great things going on.

Earlier in the evening on Spike TV, The 2009 Video Game Awards (VGA’s) were taking place. It’s a fairly entertaining show for the fastest growing entertainment medium in the world. The plight of gamers and MMA fans are very similar. Both are growing in popularity and very profitable, but are still fighting for seats at the table in the mainstream. The UFC took another small step towards that on Saturday night.

To start, they had good presence at the event. Kimbo Slice was there to present the trailer for “UFC Undisputed 2010″ which is featured above what you are reading now. He received a very good reaction from the crowd and was instantly recognizable. Forrest Griffen was also in attendance as “UFC Undisputed 2009″ was up for Best Individual Sports Game. There was stiff competition from some very established franchises. “Tiger Woods PGA Tour” by gaming juggernaut EA was nominated.  EA also had “Fight Night Round 4″ (draw your own MMA vs Boxing parallels here) nominated while Nintendo offered the wildly popular “Wii Sports Resort.”

Keep in mind this was the very first “Undisputed” title and really the first all encompassing MMA game of it’s kind.  It ended up winning the category.  This is a much larger deal than most people realize.  The gaming universe is very stratified.  Sports gamers are usually a very different breed than your traditional nerd gamer.  It is very rare when one game can motivate both to make a purchase.  ”Madden” has that.  ”Modern Warfare” seems to have it.  ”Undisputed” looks to be following in that mold.

You don’t have to be a geeky gamer or mixed martial arts fan to be drawn to the game’s  deceptive simplicity. You want to button mash your opponent to death?  Ok, you can do that.  Say you are a more seasoned fan and you want to try your hand at the takedowns and submissions?  You can do that too.  The key is “Undisputed” harkens back to the golden years of “Street Fighter 2″ and “Mortal Kombat.”  It has something that those games didn’t have though.  Credibility with sports fans.

Guys that just but “Madden,” “NBA 2K” and “Tiger Woods” are more likely to give “Undisputed” a try than, lets say “Dragon Age”.  Nerdy gamers don’t have to be put off by their aversion sports sims though because of the similarities the UFC game has to “Tekken,” “Marvel vs Capcom” or “Soul Caliber.”  It’s a tremendous opportunity to bridge the gap between the two factions of gamers and it could be a very profitable bridge that THQ and the UFC have built.  Video game developers and Zuffa are going after the same demographics in potential fans and customers.  It’s good to see they appear to be aware of that and are working together.

Please don’t fuck these up.

Please don’t fuck these up.

Gamespot has news on the video game adaptations of the upcoming Captain America and Thor movies being released by Marvel.  While the memories of the Captain America and the Avengers arcade game dance through my head, I can’t help but remain skeptical.  What with the recent steaming pile of shit Iron Man game based on Jon Favreau’s excellent movie.  I did enjoy Wolverine Origins Unleashed, but for every one game like that there are ten Superman 64’s.  Proceed trepidatiously:

Thor will debut in May 2011, giving the golden-haired god of thunder his first starring game role. The film will be directed by Kenneth Brannagh (Hamlet, Frankenstein), with Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Nixon) as Odin and Chris Hemsworth (Captain Kirk’s father in this year’s Star Trek) in the title role.

Captain America will follow his fellow Avenger into theaters and onto game shelves in July 2011. A cast for the film–currently titled The First Avenger: Captain America–has not yet been announced. While Thor will be starring in his own game and movie for the first time, the star-spangled supersoldier has been there before, albeit not for decades. The much-reviled 1990 filmCaptain America was released direct-to-video in the United States, while the following year’s arcade game Captain America and the Avengers fared much better, spawning ports for the NES, Genesis, and GameBoy, among others.

There have been so many bad movie based video games it is almost cliche for any gamer to raise the topic.  The games are often a rushed afterthought to try and juice more money out of a popular franchise.  There is still plenty of time to design a couple of fun video games to help build the fervor for two more giant Marvel franchise characters.  Let’s hope they don’t go all Rockateer on us…

Perfect Dark on Xbox Live?

Perfect Dark on Xbox Live?

If you are like me, you’ll never forget the feel of strapping a timed mine onto a “sims” back.  Watching that dumb son of a bitch flail down the hallway only to explode moments later.  You’ll never forget the feeling of unloading your RC-P120 into your best friends back after promising to work with him against the simulants.   Who didn’t love lobbing a laptop gun in the back of a room and wracking up the cheesedick kills.  Fun for all.  I went back and played the OG N64 version the other day.  It’s unbearable.  The graphics are just too horrendous and the N64 controller is archaic.  The game needs to be updated.  Enter Kotaku with the great news:

Three new screenshots for the Xbox Live Arcade remake of Rare’s Perfect Dark have surfaced on the developer’s website, showing off some re-skinned weapons and a new look for Joanna Dark’s Maian pal, Elvis.

4J Studios seems to be doing a fine job of updating the original Perfect Dark to HD for its Xbox Live Arcade incarnation. Elvis is certainly looking healthy, all spruced up and ready to rescue Joanna from the clutches of the vile Skedar. Check out the other two screens below to see how the environments and weapons are coming along.

Just think about how much pot will be smoked and how many friends will get called a cunt when this thing drops.  Everyone that played this thing when they were younger is now 27 and drunk.  Should be a fucking blast.

Madden arcade game simplifies things for those of us that just want to play video games

Madden arcade game simplifies things for those of us that just want to play video games

Madden nerds drive me insane.  Not only are they nerdier than any WOW player, but they look down their nose at regular gamers that enjoy shooters RPG’s, hack and slashes, ETC.  I love football and I love video games.  Why does EA make it so hard for me to enjoy playing a video game ABOUT football?   This looks like a step in the right direction.  By the right direction, I mean the NFL Blitz direction.  Kotaku has some good news for those of us that don’t want to control the lead block in our football games:

Today EA announces Madden NFL Arcade, a downloadable, pick-up-and-play, 5-on-5 football game for those of us who get dizzy looking at all of those X’s and O’s.

I’m one of those Madden players who picks up the game every year, beats the pants off of the AI in easy mode a few times, gets his ass kicked online once or twice, and then trades the game back in. I enjoy the game, but when it comes right down to it the whole thing is a bit too deep for me. Perhaps Madden NFL Arcade for Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network is the answer.

There are no penalties and no field goals in Madden NFL Arcade. Just four downs to make it 60 yards to your goal, with the first team to score 30 points winning. Games can be tailored to your liking, tweaking skill level and points-to-win, and during play you can use any of 13 “Game Changers” to break the field wide open. It almost sounds like NFL Street, doesn’t it?

“When you look around the office and see your whole team playing and having tons of fun with it, you know the game hit the right mark,” said marketing director Nathan Stewart. “We have diehard Madden fans who have worked on the franchise for a decade, and more casual gamers who are all playing together and enjoying it. If our productivity the past few weeks is any indication, we’ve created a game that everyone will love.”

Madden NFL Arcade will be available on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in December for $14.99 and 1200 Microsoft points respectively.

This is more my speed.  I always liked NFL Street.  It was a fun, over the top NFL game that wasn’t the Tom Clancy version of football that Madden has degraded into.  Quarterback vision?  Kiss my ass.  I just want to play the game and have a good time in between sundays where I can watch the real thing.  I know I can run the Redskins offense better than Jim Zorn.  GT: chaddukes
